FROM YOUR PASTOR
PENTECOST SUNDAY
On Pentecost Sunday we celebrated the wonderful good news that the risen Lord has poured out his Spirit unto us, first of all to convince us of his victory over sin and death, and then to enable us to continue his work of salvation by our own love and concern for others.
As we can well imagine, the disciples were filled with fear and foreboding after the death of their master. But suddenly Jesus is there among them radiant with life. He shows them his terrible wounds, which have now become beautiful emblems of his love for them. He offers them his peace that the world can offer a superficial peace that amounts to little more than a temporary cessation of hostilities. This profound peace becomes possible through the presence of his Spirit in them.
And then Jesus tells them what possessing the Spirit will mean in their lives. Henceforth, they will need to be converted from their natural tendency to be self-centered to an attitude of loving concern for others. And this will be manifested first and foremost by their willingness to forgive others. This would be impossible if we did not enjoy the powerful presence of the Spirit who enables us to overcome our constant judgmental tendencies.
Life Implications
As fragile human beings, we know the experience of living in fear and of being anxious and worried about many things, some of which exist only in our imagination. Jesus, having absorbed the ultimate violence, offers us his peace and thereby enables us to be confident and joyful in the face of even severe uncertainty and threat. This represents a real experience of liberation from the paralysis of fear a paralysis that often prevents us from doing beautiful and risky things, like giving cut flowers!
With this peace and joy comes the obligation to share our blessings with others. It was once thought that the command of Jesus to forgive or retain sins was addressed only to priests and referred only to the Sacrament of Reconciliation. Now it is clear that this charge is addressed to all the followers of Jesus. We must all accept the wonderful and awesome responsibility of offering or withholding forgiveness. In this case, the sin of omission looms large and should make us all examine our consciences in regard to the many times that we may have persisted in nursing old injuries or have refused to make allowance for extenuating circumstances in the lives of those we call sinners.
In this regard, we should recall the very strong words of Jesus in the Sermon on the Mount: “Judge not, that you be not judged. For with the judgment you pronounce you will be judged, and the measure you give will be the measure you get” (Matthew 7:1-2). When we face the final judgment, we all hope to have a merciful judge and now we know how to assure that happy outcome.
It is, of course, very difficult to achieve such an ideal of forgiveness. And that is why Jesus offers us the Holy Spirit who, if given half a chance, will empower us to become the kind of gentle, caring and compassionate persons that can make a real difference in a world that desperately needs the witness of love and forgiveness. Let us all rejoice in this wonderful gift of the Spirit.
On June 13 our worship service will be at 10:00 a.m. followed by our Church Picnic.
In Peace

Messiah’s Pre-K class, Pastor Mason, Sue Ann Ross, Lisa Landers and Sally Schoonmaker celebrated Earth Day by planting a Rose of Sharon Tree on the church property.
PRE-K CORNER
Our school year ends at Memorial Day…so we are coming down the ‘home stretch’. Many of our lessons are focusing on our pre-writing skills as well as reading, math and science.
We end our year with a PIZZA Lunch for the students and their families. It is important to pause and reflect on the positive experience and growth for each child this past year. A special THANKS to Mrs. Terry Walck for helping us prepare songs for our final day’s program.
To celebrate EARTH WEEK and Arbor Day the preschoolers planted a Rose of Sharon Tree on the church property. The children are learning ‘little ones’ can do many ‘little things’ which will make a BIG difference! Blue was our color for the month of May. We talked about the beauty of SPRING, the changes which come during this season, the new birth of baby animals, and highlighted the joy and appreciation for our MOTHERS. Our project for the Mother’s Day gift was an apron with our hand prints. We love to give our Moms an exciting gift.
A special “thanks” to Grandma Sally Schoonmaker, who has returned from a long vacation and brought us much JOY. The children love to see her when she just stops in to say ‘hello’ and give them a hug!
Prospective students are inquiring about next year and observing our class in session. If you have friends, family or neighbors who would be interested in more information, please have them phone 754-7755 (classroom), 754-4944 (church office), or 754-8570 (Sue Ann Ross at home) or 754-2352 (Mrs. Lisa Landers at home). Thanks to everyone who continues to spread the word about our wonderful location and our outstanding program.

BUFFALO LUTHERAN EMPLOYMENT SERVICE (B.L.E.S.)
Over 26 years ago, the Buffalo Lutheran Employment Service began as a ministry of Christ Lutheran Church. A young man, Ken Holley, had a vision of helping people secure employment through an agency that attempted to minister to the whole person; an agency that treated people with dignity; an agency that respected the life story and experience of the person seeking help. Those themes have remained the central focus of the ministry of B.L.E.S. over the years, and are just as strong today as when the ministry began.
Over the years Ken Holley has built relationships with employers in Buffalo who share these values and have come to trust that when Ken sends someone to them for a job, they are getting an employee for whom there will be follow-up and support.
B.L.E.S. has always operated on a shoestring budget; for many years they operated in a storefront on Sycamore St. More recently they have moved ‘around the corner’ to a storefront on Fillmore. Two years ago, they moved into Hananiah Lutheran Church, where the pastor, Rev. Kenyatta Cobb, who had been helped by B.L.E.S. himself in the early years, saw an opportunity to give B.L.E.S. greater visibility and better support.
Two to three hundred people a year find employment through B.L.E.S. Perhaps it’s better to say that two to three hundred people have their life changed by B.L.E.S. In addition to employment services, B.L.E.S. also feeds a large number of individuals and families through its food pantry, provides clothes for work or for interviews through its clothing pantry. B.L.E.S. has operated classes to teach young men the responsibilities of fatherhood. Most recently, B.L.E.S. has been reaching out to seniors living in the Genesee-Fillmore Area with a lunch program, activities and connections to other helping services which are needed.
You may donate to Buffalo Lutheran Employment Service by making your check out to North Park Lutheran Church and noting “B.L.E.S.” on the memo line.
